aloha Hawaii: homes on the big islan

Most people believe that the word, "Aloha," means both hello and goodbye. It means much more than that. The complete meaning of Aloha is that of Love, Peace, and Compassion. It is the guidelines for how the residents on the islands try to live their lives. Right now the residents on the big island of Hawaii need all our love, peace, and compassion, as they endure the eruption of Kilauea volcano.

Heartbreaking

So it's been heartbreaking to watch the devastation that is happening on the big island. Kilauea volcano began erupting last week on Thursday, May 3rd.  Many scientists believe that the volcano could soon blow it's top, spewing rocks, lava, and toxic gases three miles into the sky.

Kilauea Eruption

The eruption of Kilauea has forced the evacuation of over 2,000 residents.  I'm sure that number will increase over the next few days. 15 fissures have opened up about 25 miles east of Kilauea's summit crater, along the east rift zone.  These fissures are in residential neighborhoods. These fissures are releasing lava, steam and toxic gases into the air. The residents of the island are also dealing with forest fires, power outages, road closures, water supply issues, and thus far 36 structures (HOMES) have been destroyed by lava.  The eruption has caused over 1,000 earthquakes; the largest was last Friday a magnitude of 6.9 on the Richter scale.

You may ask yourself, " Why would anyone want to live in an area where you have the possibility of all these natural disasters?" Because...

It's so damn beautiful!

I'm not going to try and list all the reasons why you would want to live in Hawaii; there are just too many! If you ever get the chance to see the sunset in Hawaii, I highly recommend it. For an east coast gal, it was a sight I have not gotten over.

Architecture

From a design standpoint, the diversity of architecture is astounding on all the islands.  The homes reflect Hawaii's long history. The islands have everything from thatched native huts to mission, arts & crafts, art deco, beaux-arts, colonial/Greek revival, classic Georgian, International, plantation styles, along with Asian influences and ultra-modern homes.  The Hawaiian islands seem to have it all.

Historic Homes on the Big Island Hawaii

These are just a few of the amazing houses on the island.  Many of these structures are on the eastern side of Kilauea, in or near Hilo.
