decorating with plates & platters
Do you have a set of china that you love but never use? Is it packed away in your dining room or your attic? Pull it out and hang it up on the wall or display some of it on a bookcase!
enjoy and use the things you already own
It may seem old fashion to decorate with plates and platters, but it’s an easy way to add interest and dimension to your walls. It’s an inexpensive and creative way to create a focal point in any room. Use the plates and platters you already own or pick some up at an antique store, eBay, or a flea market. They do not need to cost a lot! Use the ones that have cracks or chips in them. The older, the better in my opinion.
if you love it, use it
Large pieces of good art are expensive. There’s no getting around it. If the art piece itself is not expensive, then the framing will be. Plates and platters are an unexpected way to fill a vast expanse of wall if you do not own a ton of artwork. If you don’t want your house to look like your neighbors, this is an easy first step you can take. Don’t limit yourself to the kitchen or dining room. You can use plates as art in any space, bedrooms, bathrooms, family rooms, and hallways. Again if you love it, use it!
creamware, blue and white, majolica
There are a variety of styles, shapes, and colors that you can choose to use for your wall display. Choose the style that you like the best and that works with your decor. I've always been partial to using creamware or white plates however you can't go wrong using blue and white plates and platters. Majolica pottery is another option, and it is stunning because it's less formal and has a variety of colors and patterns that you can choose. Another alternative is to use a few of your mothers or grandmothers silver trays.
Remember, less is always more unless you live in a gigantic English manor, then more is more!
Here are a few examples that I hope will inspire you to decorate with plates and platters. Enjoy!
