happy national Ice Cream day 2019
Sunday is national ice cream day. I know it’s a made up holiday but who cares it’s ice cream!
This cool, creamy, delectable treat has been around since the Ancient Romans. By the 1700’s the dessert was spreading like wild fire through Europe. It’s not surprising that our founding fathers, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison were all big fans of the creamy dessert.
George Washington enjoyed the treat so much he made it a staple on the menu at Mount Vernon, his home in Virginia. The dessert became a status symbol of the upperclass because it was so labor intensive to make and keep.
First Lady, Dolly Madison, was also a huge fan. Her personal favorite was oyster ice cream. I love ice cream, and I love oysters, but the combination does not sound very appetizing.
Be sure to go out on Sunday and gobble some up. Many businesses will be have specials and many will have free options. Life doesn’t get much better when you can get free ice cream.
